Hydroelectricity for a Brighter Future Essay -- Hydro Electricity Ener
Hydroelectricity for a Brighter Future The environment is a precious thing and we need to protect and care for it. The environment does not have its own voice; therefore we must speak on behalf of the environment. Over the past century as technology has improved and people have desired more materialistic things, our environment has been harmed tremendously. I will not deny that I do enjoy having cars, electricity, and other technologies which make my life easier, but I do believe that there are other means of obtaining energy through different methods that are more environmentally friendly. A great example of one of these methods is hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy is a renewable energy source which relies on the natural water cycle, which includes evaporation, precipitation, and the flow of water due to gravity. Today, we have a method of taking this hydroelectric energy and turning it into electricityââ¬âhence the term hydroelectricity. Hydro means water and hydroelectric means creating electricity from water power. When it rains, water becomes streams that run down the sides of mountains and hills into the ocean. This falling water can be used to do work. Keep in mind energy is the ability to do work. Therefore, the falling water which has kinetic energy is converted into electricity (Hydro Power 2005). Hydroelectricity is created in hydroelectric power plants through the usage of dams, turbines, generators, and transmission lines. Hydroelectric power plants capture the energy of falling water and convert this energy into electricity. Dams are created to raise the water level of the rivers to generate falling water and control the flow of the water. This forms ... ...re we are getting our next fuel source from and it will add to our wallets, not take away. Works Cited Baird, Stuart. Hydro-Electric Power. 1993. Personality Traits in the Devil Wears Prada The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 Twentieth Century Fox film, Directed by David Frankel. This story takes place in downtown New York; it is a story of a girl, a girl named Andrea Sachs. Andy, as sheââ¬â¢s most commonly referred to, is a fresh out of college, armed with a Journalism degree, and ready to make it big in New York. However, New York doesnââ¬â¢t exactly give her the job she expected, and she ends up working as an assistant for the monstrous Miranda Priestly.Miranda Priestly is editor in chief for one of the biggest fashion magazines in New York, Runway. When Andy begins her job, she has no idea how challenging it will be, or how challenging her boss, Miranda Priestly will be, for that matter. One of the primary ways Miranda and Andy differ/clash is in their personalities. In this paper, I will analyze the very different personality traits of Miranda and Andy. The personality traits I will focus on are, Machiavellianism, commu nication style, verbal aggressiveness, and the results of verbal aggressiveness, stress. The first personality trait, Machiavellianism, is a term coined from the book, The Prince, by Niccolo Maciavelli (1469-1527). Machiavelli wrote the book as a handbook for the success of royalty. His basic piece of advice was to do whatever it took to be successful, the term Machiavellianism, simply means that ââ¬Å"the end justifies the meansâ⬠(Avtgis, 2010, p. 135). A person with high ââ¬Å"machâ⬠simply means that person will lie, steal, cheat and do whatever else it takes to get what they want. Miranda Priestly is an excellent example of someone that is very high on the mach scale. For example, when she finds out her job is threatened by a younger woman, she blackmails Irv, the owner of Runway, to keep her in her position as editor in chief, at the expense of her friend, Nigel, who thought he was getting a promotion as well. When confronted about this by Andy she says, ââ¬Å"You w ant this life, those choices are necessaryâ⬠(The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda). Because Miranda communicates in this Machiavellianism way, and does not hesitate to sacrifice the ones closest to her, people are always wary and suspicious around her. While Miranda is very high on the Machiavellianism scale, Andy is relatively low. She demonstrates this by leaving Runway after Mirandaââ¬â¢s behavior toward Nigel. Andy even goes as far as to give her designer clothes to Emily; Mirandaââ¬â¢s other assistant, to make up for taking her spot as Mirandaââ¬â¢s assistant to the Paris fashion show. The contrast between the two shows character in Andy, and it also shows the success of Miranda. Miranda stayed successful, while Andy became jobless; maybe there is some truth to the saying, the nice guy always finishes last. The second personality trait discussed is Communication style; it is defined as, ââ¬Å"A trait reflecting how a person verbally and para-verbally interacts with othe rsâ⬠(Avtigs, 2010, p. 143). People communicate in many different ways, and with many different tones, the textbook lists ten different ways of interaction. Combinations of these specific interaction styles produce something called the communicator image. The communicator image shows how well the person can effectively communicate to others. This is divided into two groups, non-affirming style, which threatens the other persons self concept or worth, and the affirming style, which validates the other persons self concept or worth (Avtgis, 2010). Miranda and Andy have opposite communicator images and they demonstrate different communication interaction styles. Miranda has a very strong non-affirming communicator image. Her interaction styles are, dramatic, dominant and contentious. She shows her dramatic style, which is either under exaggerating something, or over exaggerating it, when she calls Andy up late one evening needing a flight from Miami to New York.Andy informs her tha t there is a hurricane and that is why her flight is cancelled. Miranda answers; ââ¬Å"Please, itââ¬â¢s just drizzling! â⬠(Devil Wears Prada, Miranda) Miranda extremely under exaggerates the severity of the weather because she just wants to get home; this communication style is very unfair. Miranda also has a very dominant style of communicating; Andy sums this up best when she is talking to her boyfriend about Miranda, ââ¬Å"She is not happy unless everyone around her is panicked, nauseous, or suicidalâ⬠(Devil Wears Prada, Andy).Mirandaââ¬â¢s communication style is so dominating that it severely negatively influences the people around her. Finally, Miranda also exhibits a very contentious communication style, which is communicating in a very confrontational way. She demonstrates this style when she is speaking to people she works with, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just baffling to me why it is so impossible to put together a decent run through, you people have had hours a nd hours to prepareâ⬠(Devil Wears Prada, Miranda). Of course, no one responds to her confrontational tone, because everyone is so afraid of her; however it is the perfect example of how she is a non-affirming communicator.Andy, on the other hand, has an affirming communicator image. Her interaction styles that make up this image are, friendly, relaxed, and attentive. All of these styles put people at ease, and make them comfortable. The first example of this is friendly interaction style, Andy shows this when she is attempting to make small talk to Emily, the other assistant, and asks her if she is doing anything fun this weekend, she asks politely and with a smile, but Emily responds with a curt ââ¬Å"yesâ⬠(Devil Wears Prada, Emily and Andy).Obviously people in Mirandaââ¬â¢s office are not used to friendly interaction! Her second interaction style is relaxed, throughout the whole movie Andyââ¬â¢s style of communicating is relaxed, she is self confident and this s hows in most of her interactions with Emily, who is always nervously running around, Andy is steady and sure, this causes Emily to rely and depend on her, especially at the benefit, where Andy bails Emily out because sheââ¬â¢s forgotten information (Devil Wears Prada, Andy). Her final interaction style that gives her an affirming image is the attentive style. The best example is when Miranda confides in her about her divorce, Andy listens to her with an active interest, asking questions, and making eye contact. She says, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m so sorry Miranda, is there anything I can do? â⬠(The Devil Wears Prada, Andy). This shows that Andy is a very caring person, easy to talk to, and affirming. While both Andy and Miranda have a different communicator image and interaction styles, this movie is an excellent example of what these different styles and images are, and how they impact communication.I think everyone would agree that Andy is a lot more approachable than Miranda, and a lot less intimidating, however Miranda demands respect and is very successful at what she does. The final trait that will be discussed is verbal aggressiveness and the stress that it causes. As one could probably guess, Miranda is the one possessing the verbal aggressiveness and Andy is the one that the verbal aggressiveness is causing stress to.Verbal aggressiveness is defined by the text book as, ââ¬Å"A predisposition to attack the self-concept of another person with the intent to inflict psychological harm or painâ⬠(Avtgis, 2010, p. 137). There are many different types of verbal aggressiveness, but in this paper we will just discuss teasing and threats. There are also many types of negative reactions to verbal aggression, but we will simply discuss the stress that it can cause. This film is an excellent example of verbal aggressiveness and the results that it can have.Miranda has a very strong verbal aggression trait; this comes out toward Andy in two forms, teasing an d threats. In the first half of the movie, Miranda is constantly making fun of the way Andy dresses, making comments such as, ââ¬Å"your lumpy blue sweater,â⬠and Andy ââ¬Å"fishing her clothing out of a clearance binâ⬠(The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda). This type of verbal aggressiveness can cause psychological harm to the individual on the receiving end. The second trait of verbal aggressiveness Miranda shows against Andy is threats. Threats can be very damaging and cause much stress. An excellent example of this is when Andy does something wrong, to punish her Miranda asks for Andy to accomplish an outrageous task, and if she fails to do so, ââ¬Å"Just donââ¬â¢t bother coming backâ⬠(The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda). Instead of firing her immediately, Miranda wishes to inflict worry and stress on Andy, just to pay her back, this is not effective communication! Verbal aggressiveness is a trait that goes hand in hand with stress reaction. Andy naturally feels stre ss when she is being threatened and teased constantly.Andy displays this stress in frequent situations, running down the street arms full of bags for Miranda, or walking (more like running) her dog, and carrying trays of steaming Starbucks. She also displays stress caused by verbal aggressiveness in her personal life, she is always telling her boyfriend she is burnt out, tired, and fed up with Miranda, who gives her a constant headache (The Devil Wears Prada, Andy). This is a perfect example of just how much verbal aggressiveness can negatively affect someone.I really enjoyed watching this movie, it was an excellent example of personality traits, I had a hard time narrowing down the ones I wanted to write about. This film has demonstrated almost perfectly the different personality traits in an organization and how these traits are directly related to how people communicate with each other. I now have a deeper understanding of Machiavellianism, communication style, verbal aggressiven ess and the results of that verbal aggressiveness, and how those specific personality traits work in an organization. While Miranda may be viewed as cruel, selfish and mean, she was truly successful and wonderful at what she did. Personality traits that sometimes are viewed negatively can be the best thing for a competitive company. Andy was a sweet and good-natured girl, at the end of the movie she gets a job interview at the New Yorker to be a journalist; this job would definitely better fit her personality traits and her strengths. This just goes to show that personality traits are directly related to specific jobs and organizations. Personality Traits in the Devil Wears Prada Organizational Communication 418631

Christianity and Buddhism
Two different faiths; Christianity and Buddhism. These two religions that have pillars centered on Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha respectively. Christianity has had a wide influence, stretching across the world and with leading figures like President George Bush (USA), Senator Hillary Clinton, and even the Pope, a spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and head of the Vatican sate. Buddhism, though mostly predominant in the orient world, has penetrated the Western cultures, Hollywoodââ¬â¢s Richard Gere, Tina Turner, and L. A Lakers coach, Phil Jackson have identified with the Buddhists Faith through its spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. These two faiths have parallels. In contrast or comparison the two faiths meet and also depart at the foundational level of the very pillars of Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha. The Differences At the very moment of birth Jesus Christ was born in a manger in the midst of want and desolation. According to biblical scriptures he was born among the poo r. Gautama Buddha on the other hand, was born in a palace where his father who was the ruler of a region within present day Nepal, made sure that he lived within the pleasures and wealth of his empire. In addition, Buddha lived as a prince, as royalty whereas Christ was born into a family where the father figure was a carpenter and he had to learn the skills of carpentry. The divinity of Jesus Christ has a divergence from that of Buddha. Jesus Christ claimed that he was the only Son of God. The bible in many of its texts reaffirms this divinity; to a tune of calling Jesus Christ, the ââ¬Å"presence of Godâ⬠as man. Buddha However, claimed no divinity in person. Only that about 700 years after Buddha passed on, Mahayana Buddhism attached divinity to the character of Gautama. .Buddha worked out no miracles, signs or wonders. The bible however, in the New Testament is wrought with events of miracles of Jesus Christ. From the beginning of the synoptic Gospel or Matthew, through Mar k, Luke and John, the Lord Jesus Christ healed the afflicted stopped and calmed a raging sea among other miracles. Jesus Christ, speaking on the mount espoused and blessed ââ¬Å"those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be satisfiedâ⬠. He encouraged his followers to ââ¬Å"seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things would be added unto them (who believed)â⬠.However Buddha saw the need of eliminating craving and desire and as such attains enlightment. Jesus Christ said ââ¬Å"I am the Way, the Truth and the Lifeâ⬠. Buddha however, took the role of a guide, a religious ââ¬Å"Way Showerâ⬠. Buddha had a means to the nirvana for the believer, but each believer had to find his or her own path Buddha is buried in the Himalaya Mountains, at Kusinara. He never resurrected. After crucifixion and death, Christ resurrected on the third day triumphing over death and sin. The SimilaritiesThe Buddhist scriptures tell of Buddhaâ â¬â¢s mother, Mahamaya, being made to carry child Buddha in her womb through the power of the ââ¬Å"holy Spiritâ⬠. Also a ââ¬Å"heavenly messengerââ¬â¢ informed Mahamaya of the way she was to bear the ââ¬Å"son of the highest kings. â⬠Many other events followed the birth of Buddha like the appearance of the ââ¬Å"flower Starâ⬠in the East, and also a group of angelic messengers celebrated the birth of Buddha. The birth of Christ is foretold in the scriptures of the bible as the mother Mary was made to conceive through the ââ¬Å"immaculate conceptionâ⬠of the Holy Spirit.Angels also ministered unto Mary telling her that she would bear a son who would redeem the world. In addition the star of the east shone bright and did guide the three Magi to see and proclaim the birth of the ââ¬Å"king of Kingsâ⬠At the birth of Jesus Christ King Herod set out to kill all the male firstborns with a view of eliminating any possible challenger to his throne. Not f orgetting that Virgin Mary Mother of Jesus had to run and hide the kid Jesus from the executioners. For the case of Buddha he was born of a Virgin called Maya. King Bimbasara wanted him dead as he thought that Buddha would one day ascend the throne.Buddha amazed the wizened old men and priests of the temple just as Jesus Christ did to the Pharisees and teachers of the Mosaic Law; both achieved this at the age of 12. James Hastings, in the book encyclopedia of religion and ethics page 883 tells of Buddha demanding of his disciples that they renounce all forms of worldly possessions. ââ¬Å"The number of the disciples increased rapidly, and Gautama sent forth his monks on missionary tours hither and thither, bidding them wonder everywhere, preaching the doctrine, and teaching them to order their lives with self restraints, simplicity and charityâ⬠.On the other hand Jesus Christ called ââ¬Å"to himself the twelve disciples sending them out two by two. So they went out and preache d that men should repent Mark 6:7-12â⬠. According to the book of Mathew 28:19, Jesus Christ was part of a trinity. The Chinese (1836) alludes to the fact that Buddha is part of trinity. Indeed the two are part of trinities expressed in both religions. At birth Buddha was declared divine as was Jesus Christ. The book of Mathew, tells of the Magi who came to present Jesus with gifts and worshipping him as divine. On the other hand the divinity of Buddha was bestowed on him according to the Buddhist faith. The book of Matthew 2:2 has an angel announcing the birth of Jesus Christ. Buddhaââ¬â¢s birth was also foretold by a celestial body. They both claimed to be royal descent. Jesus Christ traced his bloodline to that of King David. Buddha, whose father is Sodhodana, has the royalty also traced to the first dynasty of Maha Sammata. At the birth Christ was presented with gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold. On the other hand, Buddha received precious substances and priceless Jewe ls.The synoptic gospel of Matthew tails of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ on the mountain. For Buddha, it also happened on a mountain where ââ¬Å"A flame of light engulfed his head, shining as the sun or moonâ⬠. The scriptures tell of the ââ¬Å"angelsâ⬠praising in heaven at their birth. For Jesus, the bible records, ââ¬Å"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill among menâ⬠. For Buddha it is written ââ¬Å"Today, Bodhisattva is born on earth, to give joy and peace to men and Devas (angels), to shed light on the dark places, and to give sight to the blindâ⬠.De Bunsen, in page 45 notes that Buddha was baptized in the presence of the spirit of God. Jesus Christ in Matthew 3:16 is baptized in the presence of the spirit of God. According to Max. Muller in the book ââ¬ËIntroduction to the Science of Religionââ¬â¢, two very similar incidences happened in the lives of Jesus and Buddha. Muller explains ââ¬Å"Ananda, the disciple of Buddha, after a long walk in the country, meets with Matangi, a woman of the low caste of the Kandalas, near a well and asks her for some waters. She tells him what she is and that she must not come near him.Ananda replies ââ¬Å"my sister, I ask not for your caste or family, I ask only for a drought of water. She afterwards becomes a disciple of Buddha. â⬠The bible on the other hand tells the story of the Samaritan woman. According to the book of John 4:7-9 ââ¬Å"there came a woman of Samaria to draw water Jesus said to her; ââ¬Å"give me a drinkâ⬠for his disciples had gone to the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him ââ¬Å"how is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? â⬠for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans, They launched their careers at an almost similar age.Itââ¬â¢s at age 29 that Buddha ââ¬Å"went to the garden, saw a monk who was calm, tranquil, self possessed, serene and dignified. The prince, (Buddha, determined to become such a monkâ⬠. The Christian book says ââ¬Å"Jesus, when he begun his ministry, was about 30 years of ageâ⬠. Both were tempted by the devil. In Matthew 4:10, ââ¬Å"All these I will give you if you worship meâ⬠Christ was told. And Buddha was toldâ⬠go not forth to adopt a religious life but return to your kingdom and in seven days you shall become emperor of the world, riding over four continentsâ⬠.Both celebrated overcoming evil, for Jesus, according to Matthew 4:11 the ââ¬Å"angels come and ministered to himâ⬠. For Buddha, ââ¬Å"The skies rained flowers, as delicious odors prevailed in the airâ⬠EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Perhaps the best conclusion to these differences and similarities are the actions made in the lives and times of these men. And this has to do with expressing faith where skepticism abounds. So another similarity among the two men is; ââ¬Å"comeâ⬠, so Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus, but when he saw the wind he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out.ââ¬Å"Lord, save me! â⬠as shown in Matthew 14:29-30. Buddha showed skeptical villagers his disciple walking across a river without sinkingâ⬠. In addition some incidences attest to the similarity of their situation like the time that Buddha took a purifying birth in the river Nerajara, just as Christ Jesus too was baptized in the river Jordan. The bible recounts the journey of Christ riding on a donkey with fronds of palm spread out for him on the way. Though slightly different the story of Buddha is centered on his riding a horse, with flowers being tossed by angels.Jesus Christ was poor, lacking in earthly possessions and encouraging the wealthy to ââ¬Å"sell all they had and follow him. â⬠Buddha was no different; he took an oath of embracing poverty and even wondered home Less, advising his disciples, who were 12 as those of Jesus, ââ¬Å"to travel without money, trusting to the aid of providence â⬠. 1. http://www. probe. org 2. http://www. lucidcafe. com 3. http://www. encyclopedia. farlex. com/buddhist. 4. http://www. moonpointer. com 5. http://www. songha. org/index. html

How smart phone change or life(draw back and advantage) Research Paper
How smart phone change or life(draw back and advantage) - Research Paper Example The dominant perspective is that smart phones are killing personal computing, citing the tremendous growth in usage, mobile technology and capability. According to a report in The Guardian, smartphones are already poised to be the dominant device where people connect to the Internet, hold data, run programs and organize their lives - functions that have been what the PCs are made to do. What is important from these developments is that smartphones are changing the way people live, including the way humans perceive themselves and what it actually means to be human in the modern times and in the near future. Here, smartphones are showing what the author P.G. Wodehouse called as ââ¬Å"the frozen limitâ⬠or that which breaks the barriers set by constraints and limitations in our society and the world. What are Smartphones Motorola has been credited to have introduced the first truly mobile hand help phone. A team from this organization led by Martin Cooper developed the first hand set in 1973 and it was huge, weighing a staggering two kilograms (Teixeira, 2010). Back then, the cost of manufacturing a mobile costs at least $1 million as opposed to the cost of making the latest iPhone today, which is only estimated to be $191 (Associated Press 2013). In 1978, the analog cellular system was introduced and the most advanced of this technology was build in 1983, with a cost of $100 million and took almost a decade to reach consumers (Associated Press, 2012). The phones in this technology were sold for almost $4,000 each and it only has an average of about 30-minute talk time (Associated Press 2012). By 1990s, the second generation 2G phone was introduced. Around this time, the SMS - a new way of mobile communication was introduced. This began the rapid development of mobile phones as handsets began featuring capabilities for rich media content. This is now the time when mobile phones became feature phones, then, finally, smart phones. As usage became widespread, p eople start to demand more mobile data and this led to the third generation (3G) mobile technology, which was typified by reliable data speeds. New media capabilities such as video streaming became possible. Recently, the world was introduced to the wonders of 4G mobile technology, which features more incredible data speed than 3G technology (Thomas 2013). The development in data speed has been complemented by the rapid evolution of mobile phone hardware. From the first hand set back in 1973 to the current iPhone and Android phones, the changes have been revolutionary especially in terms of size, display, user interface, appearance, and battery life. The implications of these developments are that today people can communicate while on the go in numerous ways: through telephony, video, VOIP, SMS, and so on. The advances in mobile technology also magnify the tremendous benefits of the Internet. And this is further highlighted by the fact that mobile phone users have grown. Last year, the UN has reported that there are now six billion mobile phone subscribers all over the world (BBC, 2012). Impact on Human Lives There are many studies that provide empirical evidence showing how telephony has favorable effects on a countryââ¬â¢s economic growth. For example, Unwin (2009) documented the relationship between economic growth

Research - Essay Example One of his discoveries, that high vacuums can be created by using cooled charcoal, was quite useful in the field of atomic physics. The purpose behind the creation of the Dewar flask was to serve as an aid while working with liquid gases. The Dewar flask is a container to stores substances like liquid air in the hot or cold form. There is vacuum in between the two flasks it contains, which serves to prevent a change in temperature by reducing the transfer of heat. The glass walls are not strong heat conductors and the transfer of heat by radiation is further reduced by lining the walls with a reflective metal like silver. The flask is seated on a spring with a container made of metal or plastic to absorb shock. The air between the container and the flask serves to insulate the setup. Sir James Dewar had not manufactured the vacuum flask for commercial use. Two German glass blowers in 1904 formed Thermos GmbH (Bellis 2015). The concept of vacuum flask has been used in the making of insulated bottles. The well-known name Thermos was not registered until 1906 when William B. Walker learned of the innovation of Paalen, Burger, and Aschenbrenner and gained the rights of exclusive manufacturing and marketing of thermoses in the US (Bryk 2015). The thermos insulated bottle became popular all across the US in no time. The picture of the glass-lined aluminum vacuum sealed bottle is shown as follows: The bottle shown in the picture was made in 1915 by the ââ¬Å"American Thermos Bottle Co. of Norwich, Connecticutâ⬠(Bryk 2015). In 1959, the company was named King Seeley Thermos (KST). The bottles were particularly used by outdoor laborers like construction crews who needed to keep the drinks hot or cold for extended periods of time. The raw materials mainly used to make thermos include stainless steel or plastic and glass. Stainless steel or plastic is used to make the outer cup whereas glass is used to make the inner cup. Nowadays, thermoses
